Kids Times 2006 Above and Beyond - Syracuse New Times

Welcome to the 18th annual issue of Kids Times, a special section of the Syracuse New Times created by and for children.

In January, each Central New York school district was invited to participate in this year's contest while potential advertisers were contacted and sold Kids Times advertising space by New Times advertising sales representatives.

A few changes were implemented this year to call more attention to the contest aspect of Kids Times and to receive even better student entries from participating schools for our advertisers.

One new and important innovation to Kids Times this year is that one lucky participating student entry was chosen at random from all entries received to win $500 for his or her school.

Children in grades 1 through 4 were invited to enter the Kids Times Poster Contest, sponsored this year by Family Times, the parenting guide of Central New York. The theme assigned was 'Above and Beyond: How kids go Above and Beyond in the classroom, at home and in our community.' While we received hundreds of clever, thoughtful and well-executed entries from dozens of schools, space only allows us to publish the first-place winner for each of the four grades.

Students in grades 5 through 8 were eligible to participate in up to three categories of the contest, including editorial, design an ad and design the cover.

For the editorial portion of our contest, students were urged to put pen to paper to compose a story, poem, letter to the editor or lyrics to a song using the theme, 'Above and Beyond: How kids go Above and Beyond in the classroom, at home and in our community.' Both teachers and New Times editors alike judged most entries worthy of publication.

In order to be eligible to enter the popular design-the-cover contest students first had to submit a design-an-ad entry for an assigned participating advertiser. For the design-an-ad and design-the-cover categories, the advertiser (or client) was the final judge.

The recipient of this year's $500 Kids Times contest prize is Sara Klaben, a fifth-grader at Tully Elementary School. Her ad entry was chosen at random by Syracuse New Times and Family Times Promotion Director, Marlene Belge.

Thank you to everyone who participated, especially our advertisers, educators and, of course, kids-we all benefit from your power!

Learn and Listen

I go above and beyond in school when I try to get good grades and learn everything that I can. Both my parents and I hope that someday I will have a great career and that means a college degree. It will take hard work to accomplish that goal. I will also try to go above and beyond in sports. To do this I need to listen to my coaches and practice with my team. Above all I try to go above and beyond in my behavior. I work at being nice and kind to others and I try to treat everyone with respect.

In the Paint

I would want to go 'above and beyond' in something that I really love and enjoy. I love and enjoy sports, but basketball is my favorite.

I could go above and beyond in basketball by playing and practicing as much as possible. Being on different teams would help me improve my game because I would always be learning new plays and skills. Players on other teams might be better than I am and I would learn from them.

I guess that for me to go above and beyond in basketball I need to eat, sleep and breathe basketball.

Extra Miles and Smiles

I try to go above and beyond in everything I do. It's hard but I try my best in everything. It doesn't mean that I am the best but it means that I do my personal best. Some of the things I go above and beyond in are sports and school. In sports you can go that extra mile by exercising, staying in shape, and doing your best. Doing your best is all the coaches want. In school you don't have to be good at something as long you try your personal best. To go that extra mile in school you can spend extra time doing quality work. Going above and beyond is not hard, but it takes that extra effort.

How to be a Super Hoopster

This is how you go above and beyond in basketball. First you have to work on your ball handling and passing drills, and in a few months you could be a great playmaker for your basketball team. Soon you will get a lot of assists and have a wicked crossover. Second, you have to work on your defense and soon you will be able to shut your man down on defense. Then, you finally get to the good part, shooting. If you work on your shooting for a long time you will become an all-around team player and be one of the best in your league.

Fair Game

I can go above and beyond in sports. I can have a good sportsmanship and I can play fair. I can also work hard and be a leader. I can be a good sport by not complaining about a call or something like that. Also, if someone gets knocked down I can help them up. I can play fair by not playing dirty and by not cheating. I can work hard by pushing myself, by running hard or playing hard. I can be a leader by doing the right thing in sports and I can tell my team to play fair and to have fun.

Foul Plays

There are a million ways that I can go 'above and beyond' but I am going to choose foul shots.

To go 'above and beyond' in foul shots, I can keep practicing everyday. Each day, I should learn a new position, stance or tip to help me accelerate. I could work harder and harder every day, until I am 'above and beyond' everybody else.

Going 'above and beyond' everybody else could help me be a talented person. I could achieve so much in my life if I choose to go 'above and beyond.'

A Can-Do You

Have you ever wanted to be just like someone? They exceed your expectations, right? They are perfect role models to look up to. You can be someone to look up to, too. You have to have determination, courage and dedication. People will admire you because you might be the fastest, smartest or strongest person they have ever met. Make sure you try to reach for anything even if it seems impossible, because the impossible is possible if you believe in yourself. Make sure you push the limits, test your strengths and ultimately believe in yourself because you can achieve anything. The only person stopping you, is you.

Keeping Track

Have you ever done something more than you had to do? I have. Doing more really made a difference for me.

One day at track meet I lost and my coach told me to run two miles every day. Instead of two miles I decided to extend it to three miles everyday because two didn't seem enough. After two weeks I was running much faster. Yesterday, I came in first and my coach was really proud of me. He told me that I went 'above and beyond.'

If you go 'above and beyond' you can achieve your goals, too.

Role Models

There are many people in our world today who go above and beyond.

Our parents go above and beyond to see that we use all of our abilities and have fun with our life. Coaches go above and beyond to make sure we use all of the athletic abilities God gave us. Teachers go above and beyond to give us a good education. Priests also go above and beyond to teach us about our religion and faith.

You see, everyone is capable of going above and beyond. These people go above and beyond to make our lives good and our world a better place.

Things Go Better with Coke

One time I had a friend over. We were playing a game, and we got really hungry. We asked my dad if we could have a little snack. He said OK. But we wanted to finish our game. We were playing when my dad called us upstairs. We went into the kitchen and there were two plates with two pieces of toast, sauce and cheese on each plate. There also was a cup of ice cold Coke next to each plate. It was really good. We thanked my father a lot for the delicious meal. Then we went back to our game. My dad really went above and beyond.

Locks of Love

My sister went above and beyond because she cut off 12 inches of her hair for Locks of Love. It is for people with cancer. I think this is very good because it helps a person go back out in public. Many people think that other people will make fun of them because they do not have any hair. I have a feeling that cutting your hair for people with cancer will really make a difference. My sister Robin was waiting two years for her hair to grow long enough to cut it off. Also my Aunt Kelly cut her hair for Locks of Love. She looked very different too. I think that more people should do this good deed so that people with cancer will know that others support them.

Big Brother

Someone very special and someone I love has gone above and beyond. He is my older brother, Nicholas. In seventh grade my older brother decided to run cross country. He had never done it before. Every Saturday we all traveled together. It was a mini-vacation. Nick started to love cross country. This year Nick is in eighth grade and is supposed to be running modified cross country. But Nick went above and beyond. He beat the time trials and now is running varsity in eighth grade.

Nick is also going above and beyond with his hair. As you know, some kids with cancer go bald. And my brother Nick is shaving his head to show support for them. On March 28, 2006, Nick went down to Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub and Restaurant for cancer. He shaved his head to raise $500.

I love Nick. He has gone above and beyond in so many different ways.

Dustbuster Sister

One time my room was very messy. I had to clean up the living room, but my little sister didn't need to do anything. I asked her if she could make my bed for me since I had so much stuff to do in the living room. She made my bed, but she did much more than that. When I came up to our room I found that my bedroom had gone from a bedroom tornado to the cleanest room in the world. Emily, my sister, had organized both our closets, sorted the books on the book shelf, put all of our toys in the toy bin, and even dusted the dressers (because for some reason she loves to do that).

I thanked my sister very much and now she is cleaning the room a bunch of times. That was so nice of her. She is great!

Champion Thoughts

He shoots... he scores! He's won the championship. He discovered the cure for polio! She has broken the speed skating record! These are some ways people have gone above and beyond.

I go above and beyond, too. I do this by working vigorously in school. I try to behave and write as much as possible on tests. I also listen intently to my awesome coaches and run as speedy as I can in basketball. For soccer I have a soccer ball 24/7. I also willingly give money to charity.

Everyone goes above and beyond in their own way. How do you go above and beyond? Why is it special?

Personal Rewards

Going above and beyond is a fantastic thing. If you work hard on something, the great feeling of doing extra will reward you.

I go above beyond in sports whenever I get the chance. I go above beyond in sports by working out with my dad. I play basketball, rain or shine.

To go above and beyond I help my aunt with her 2-year-old and newborn baby. My uncle is always so busy, so my aunt needs my help. She needs help playing with them and changing their diapers.

I try to go above and beyond as much as I can. If you want to have the wonderful feeling of doing extra then try going above and beyond yourself.

Practice Makes Perfect

Going above and beyond is doing something a little extra in school, at home, for someone you know, or any other activity in which you are involved.

One way that I go above and beyond is practicing piano longer than I have to. If there is a hard song, I don't give up, but I keep practicing and trying until I can play it. This is going above and beyond because I'm not giving up, even when it seems hard.

I study very hard for tests in school. This is going above and beyond because I am taking time to study in school and to make my future brighter.

Going above and beyond is important to who you are and who you will be in the future. Everyone should go above and beyond.

Best-Case Scenario

Going above and beyond means to do the best you can. There are many ways I go above and beyond. You can go above and beyond as well.

I go above and beyond at my house by raking the leaves without being asked. Also I help clean the downstairs. When I go to a family members house I try to help as much as possible. At school I try to go above and beyond by finding a lot of information for a project. Also I go above and beyond at a sport by running really hard when I am tired. My coach said that I really run hard.

To go above and beyond means to do your best. Everyone do their best. Everyone should go above and beyond.

Helping Hands

I go above and beyond because it is fun. Here is how I go above and beyond.

I go above and beyond at home by making beds, cleaning the litter box, and doing extra chores. I help my dad at his store by washing dishes and remembering my chores.

I go above and beyond outside my house by helping out my baby-sitter. I help my aunts by cleaning their homes and walking a dog.

Here's how I feel. I like to go above the limit because it makes me and other people feel good. I try to go above and beyond every day, and I hope you do too.

First Aid

I go above and beyond because I like to help others. It is also doing more than what is expected of me.

One thing I do is help people clean the neighborhood trash. I help by raking leaves in the fall and do some shoveling in the winter. I do chores without being told such as clean the floor at home.

I study extra hard for test and quizzes too. I also help my classmates with homework if they need help. Another thing I do is Finish a project earlier than the due date.

The best way to go above and beyond is to be a good sport and help a lot of people.

-Anna Matthews, Grade 5

Do the Right Thing

Going above and beyond means doing extra work in school, on a sports team, and for my community, even around the house. I go above and beyond by taking out the trash without being asked, walking the dogs and just doing my best. When I go above and beyond it makes me feel better about myself. I don't do the extra work because it gets me noticed but because it's the right thing. For my sports team I exercise a lot and I tell my coach if I can't make it to a game. When I tell my coach he knows that I'm sick or I have to go somewhere. For my community I shovel and salt the sidewalks. When I do this it is safer for my friends, family and for others in my neighborhood.

In school I try extra hard to finish my work without being sloppy. For upcoming tests I study to get the best grade I can. Doing the best I can is going to help me in the future. Going above and beyond in my life is a great thing to know I do all day long.

-Jack Lenkiewicz, Grade 5

Feeling Good About Yourself

I go above and beyond in a lot of ways. I'm always doing my best in school, and going the extra mile. I also go above and beyond by trying very, very hard in sports and not giving up and it makes me feel good about myself. I am friendly to my classmates. I am a good helper at my house. I do lots of chores to help out. It helps my mom a lot and it makes me feel good!

Going above and is always a good thing to do! You should always go above and beyond.

-Drew Lauzau, Grade 5

Try Harder

Going above and beyond means to help others. It means you should not just do good but do great.

I go above and beyond by helping and caring. I do this by helping my mom out when she needs me. When my brother gets hurt or scared I care for him.

I go above and beyond in sports. I do this by practicing. Also by trying my hardest and never giving up.

Another way I go above and beyond is trying hard in school. I study hard and put effort in my work. I get all my work done on time.

As you can see I go above and beyond in a lot of ways. I go above and beyond in other ways too.

-Madison Kenyon, Grade 5

Saving Planet Earth

How I could go above and beyond is I could recycle. I could tell my friends and family about why it is important to recycle because we would have a healthier environment. Also to recycle paper because every time we need more paper we are using trees. Trees are what supply us with our oxygen.

Some other things you can do to go above and beyond is to help the Hurricane Katrina victims. My school, Immaculate Conception, helped by sending school supplies to New Orleans to help give the kids and education.

Another thing you can do is if you have elders in your neighborhood you could help them. You could help them with their housework, their year, cook for them, and if they have pets you could help them with that. I have done this because my grandmother lives alone and my mom and I go down and give her company. These are some things I could do to go above and beyond.

-Kaitlynn Pfeiffer, Grade 6

Immaculate Conception

Life Lessons

'Hard work pays off.' That's what my parents say. It's true. If I work hard in school I get good grades. If I work hard at home I get rewarded. I try to do things before my parents ask me to. For example, I try to make my bed before they ask. Also I do my chores before they ask me. When it comes to sports I try to go above and beyond. I work harder and do drills by myself. When I go above and beyond I feel good about myself. When I go above and beyond and do well it makes me want to go above and beyond more.

I think everybody should go above and beyond because it makes the world a happier place. Everybody go above and beyond for God.

-Jackson Haber, Grade 5

Most Holy Rosary

Keep Pushing

Going above and beyond means to go over the limit or do more than what duty calls for. A way I go above and beyond is by pushing myself over the limit in school or in a sport I like. I also clean the dishes or clean my room when my parents don't tell me to.

It is easy to go above and beyond the call of duty in things I like doing like playing my favorite sport. There have been times when I felt tired and my whole body hurt, and I'm hot and it would seem that I can't go one more step. But I keep going and I stretch my ability beyond my limits.

It is harder to go above and beyond the call of duty in things I don't like so much like housecleaning and waking up very early in the morning for school. Sometimes these are the things that count the most when you're going above and beyond.

-Sol Escribano, Grade 5

Keys to Success

Going above and beyond is working hard, doing something extra, and doing something without being asked. I go above and beyond in many ways.

I go above and beyond when I study exceptionally hard for tests and work very hard in school. Also I participate in many school activities. Another way is in my sports. I play soccer, softball, basketball and I go skiing. For all of these I practice hard and never give up. Also I go above and beyond by helping my mom with my brother by babysitting him. Also I help my mom cook meals. Going above and beyond may help me in my future and help me do better in my life.

-Molly Downey, Grade 5

Most Holy Rosary

Goal Tending

Going above and beyond takes effort but pays off. I do this by doing extra work on a project or activity without being asked.

I also go above and beyond on my chores without receiving an allowance. Some examples are making my bed every morning, cleaning my room, or helping my family when in need.

Another way I go above and beyond is if I see someone who needs help I will help them. I help my neighbors shovel and take up their garbage cans. These things are easy to do and it makes me feel good.

You and I can go above and beyond to make the world a better place.

-Benjamin Carrock, Grade 5

Most Holy Rosary

Take It to the Limit

Above and beyond means to exceed expectations. I go above and beyond every day. I try my best in everything. If I don't try my best I'm not going above and beyond.

In school I study hard for the tests. I do my homework and schoolwork. I put a lot of my effort in school. I take great pride in my work.

I love sports, and I play on three teams. I dedicate time to the sports I play.

My parents have to work late a lot and I cook dinner. I also clean and do laundry.

So you can see going above and beyond means a lot to me. I go above and beyond in school, sports and at home.

Parks Picker-Upper

One way that I can go above and beyond in my community is picking up litter at the local parks such as Mill Run and Pratt's Falls. I think this will help the animals stay healthy and the parks will look better. I also feel other people should stand up for what they believe in: a pollution-free Earth.

-David Carey, Grade 5

Immaculate Conception

Get Happy

I think it is important to help other people because if that were you that needed help you would like other people to help you too. When I do something for someone else I feel like I'm a good person. I liked Oprah when she helped the people in New Orleans. She built Angel Lane. And when the people got in the house I felt like I was going to cry just like the people were.

I also feel like I'm a better person in my heart. It also makes me feel better when I am mad. When they are happy then I'm happy.

Help!

Helping is one of the most important things in life. If we don't help each other we wouldn't be able to do many things.

It is important for us to help each other. When we help each other we feel good about it. If someone helps you, you may accomplish something even greater.

Helping is a one-of-a-kind thing. When I help, I get that good feeling. And when you feel good about yourself, you can accomplish things then too.

Without helping we wouldn't be able to accomplish things.

-Emir Hadzic, Grade 4

H.W. Smith School

Making a Difference

I think it is important to help other people. Reason No. 1 is because the more people you help, the more friends you will have. Reason No. 2 is whenever you help someone and one day you are in trouble, the person you helped might help you back. I feel nice when I help other people because I know that I made a difference by helping them. For example, while you are playing outside and you see an old man carrying an armful of groceries and you go help him, that makes a difference because you helped somebody in the community.

-Kaya Ni, Grade 4

When the Snow Flies

I go above and beyond by helping my neighbors without them asking me if I can. I shovel their driveways whether there is a lot of snow or not. I will have nothing to do so I will go outside and help them.

I help them out other ways by pick up garbage around their lawn and house, mow their lawn, water their plants, and many other things. I feel very happy and good about myself when I'm done.

Just Do It

I think there are very many examples of going 'above and beyond.' People probably do it every day without even knowing it. They could even be as simple as feeding the dog, or cleaning your room before your parents asked you to. That way, you could say, 'I already did it.'

One 'above and beyond' that I did was get everyone in my family a Christmas present, which, of course, no one expected me to do. Or, if you know someone who has something to do and they really dislike it, you could always help out. That's what 'above and beyond' means.

-Kerry Morris, Grade 6

Gillette Road Middle School

Task Master

To go above and beyond is to accomplish a task and more. I go above and beyond by helping around the house without my parents telling me to. I also help out at school. I try to go above and beyond when I do things.

Sixth-graders can go above and beyond by helping out in the classroom. Sixth-graders can also help out a home. There are many ways for sixth-graders to go above and beyond. Everybody should go above and beyond all the time.

-Morgan Kenyon, Grade 6

Just for Kicks

How can I prove to you that I go above and beyond? I am a black belt in karate and because of this achievement, sometimes my instructors look to me to help the younger students in my karate school. When it's time for me to go help the youngsters I go early and assist them. If they need help with things like kicking and punches I help them. They want to have sharper karate skills like the older kids, that's why it feels good when I help them and they look up to me.

-Kira Hutchinson, Grade 7

On the March

I go above and beyond by helping in my community. I help with the March of Dimes by delivering donation envelopes in my neighborhood, to support the foundation. Every time my mom receives the donation packet, I am ready to go help keep babies healthy and strong.

My mom and I have been collecting/raising money for over two years now. I'm proud to say that my neighbors are very generous and supportive. I plan to continue helping this organization to help keep every baby that comes into this world healthy and strong, one baby step at a time.

-Chelsea Davidson, Grade 7

Gillette Road Middle School

Taking Time to Get It Right

To be above and beyond you have to let it come to you. Such as your talent. I just didn't already know how to draw or design, I had to work hard and keep practicing to get better. I go above and beyond when I do a lot of artwork and stuff when I use my creativity in my work. When I take the time and knowledge to do something it turns out great. That's why you nave to let if all come to you when we go above and beyond. Some people don't take their time and effort to go above and beyond and that's not showing a lot in them. I always go above and beyond.

-Natasha Parrilla, Grade 7

No Fear Factor

I truly believe that I go above and beyond. Not only do I play guitar, I conquer my fears and play voluntarily at my church in front of large crowds. I also am in Boy Scouts. We clean up parks and other public places and set up fund-raisers to raise money for those who need it. By conquering my fears, helping the less fortunate, and cleaning my environment, that is how I am a kid who goes above and beyond.

Why help others? I want to live in a safe world with kind people. Doing something as little as smiling will go a long way!

Why do extra things in life? I want to be involved, that is how I want to live my life!

Message to Self

I think that using the online instant messaging 'text message talk' is affecting the way people who use it write in school. I have experience: In school sometimes instead of using the word 'people,' I'll use the word 'ppl' (which means people in text messaging). But it's not just spelling, it's grammar and punctuation too. I'm so used to not capitalizing my 'I' when I'm talking about myself that I've actually written it that way in class. So the next time I'm on Instant Messenger, I'll try to use the right words, no matter how long it takes to type.

Ways to Go

A couple of ways I go above and beyond are doing things when people don't ask me, like if I just take my dog for a walk or take older peoples trash cans back up to their house after it gets picked up.

Things I do to go above and beyond in sports are: I practice extra hard, I practice at home and go to the gym to get better.

Ways I go above and beyond at home are: I take the trash out, feed the dog before my mom asks me to, and clean my room when it gets dirty.

Ways I am above and beyond in school are: study for tests, try to get better grades.

Going above and beyond now will help you later in life like in jobs and many other things.

Dish Night

Not many people go above and beyond every day, but it's nice to sometimes. Going above and beyond makes the people that you are helping feel a lot better. Extra Efforts

Kids can make a difference by going 'above and beyond.'

Going 'above and beyond' is very helpful to very many people, and even our environment. When children believe in something, they may help it but if they go 'above and beyond,' we will all have a better place to live. Going 'above and beyond' in school will keep every student's grades as high as possible. Doing more than is asked for projects will raise any grade. Also, when you give 110 percent in sports it will help you in the long run.

It's very important to go the extra mile!

To Infinity and Beyond

Everyone can go 'above and beyond' by doing just a little more than you're asked to do. You not only make others feel good, you make yourself feel good.

Some ways to go 'above and beyond' are doing extra credit in school, helping your sister with homework, or helping mom and dad with things that need to be done at home.

You can also make donations to people who need money, clothes or food, and you can offer help when it is needed.

Next time you want to do more, think of going 'above and beyond!'

Good, Better, Best

[Sidebar]

Everyone can go above and beyond. A lot of kids groan when their parents tell them to do something. Kids don't understand that parents aren't trying to make life harder. They're trying to get us ready for life on our own. Whenever I practice piano I always practice more than I have to. I know this will make me an excellent musician.

I try to put extra work in school. I don't always like it, but I know good grades wilt get me into a great college. It makes me feel good when I work really hard on something and I get a good grade.

I like going above and beyond because it makes me feel good about myself. If everyone goes above and beyond the world might become a better place, and people will have a stronger confidence.
